New York fans of Prince are mourning the legendary musician at one of the theaters where he gave some memorable performances.
Shortly after his publicist confirmed the 57-year-old was found dead at his Minnesota estate, the Apollo Theater in Harlem changed its famous marquee in tribute, including many of his famous lyrics.
The singer and songwriter is widely hailed as being one of the most groundbreaking musicians of his time.
Some of his top hits include "Purple Rain" and "Little Red Corvette."
The singer's musical influences included James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and the Beatles.
Many fans were outside the Apollo Theater on Thursday to honor Prince, dancing to his music, which the theater played outside.
The fans say they want to focus on celebrating his life, legacy, and music.
"They say he's gone, but I'm still not stomaching this, because he's too huge," one fan said outside the theater.
"It's unbelievable," said another. "I have almost the same feeling I had when Michael Jackson died."
"We're losing a lot of our legends, you know, and at a very young age," said Billy Mitchell, the Apollo Theater's director. "You see the streets of Harlem, everybody's walking around saying, 'I can't believe Prince is gone! 'I can't believe Prince is gone!'"
Radio stations across the city are definitely playing all of Prince's music as a tribute to him. We stopped by WBLS Radio and Hot 97 and spoke to their DJs about what Prince meant to them and the music world.
"It's about music, it's not about soul and funk," said Hot 97's DJ Enuff. "It's about how this guy was one of the greatest entertainers to ever do it."
"My gosh, is this really happening? But you think about Prince and the memories you have from his music, right? We created so many memories from it," said WBLS Radio's Deja Vu. "People love Michael Jackson, but Prince was kind of like the naughty boy. It was the battle between MJ and Prince, but Prince was that naughty guy. You knew you were pushing boundaries when you were listening to his music."
"Today, the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince," President Obama said in a statement. "Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent."
Last Friday after leaving a concert in Atlanta, Prince's private jet made an emergency landing in Illinois.
He was taken to a hospital to get treated for pneumonia, and was then released.
It is unknown if this is connected to his death.
Local police said the death remains under investigation.
