NY1 VIDEO: A new report is revealing more information on an elevator accident that killed an 84-year-old man in a Bronx senior housing complex. NY1's Lori Chung joins us now with more from Allerton.
Olegario Pabon's picture still hangs inside Boston Road Plaza, three months after he was fatally injured falling out of a malfunctioning elevator on Christmas Eve — a tragic event friends at the senior public housing building remember well.
Officials say the elevator drifted upwards when the 84-year-old tried to get in. Its doors slamming on his hand and leg, dragging him until he fell out into the hallway.
He died three days later from his injuries. The city's Department of Investigation says the New York City Housing Authority may be partly to blame because it all happened an hour and a half after a resident called the housing authority to say the elevator was going up and down by itself with the door open and that it was "very dangerous."
Still — it wasn't flagged as an emergency here where people here say NYCHA is often slow to respond.
