Layoffs were announced in what appears to be the beginning of the end for the nation's oldest Spanish-language daily newspaper.
On December 30 ImpreMedia management sent the New York News Guild a notice of plans to lay off roughly half of all employees this month at El Diario, a 102-year-old newspaper.
At an event last year, a former ImpreMedia CEO said El Diario would soon shut down.
The Guild says that the notice was issued before January 1 and violated a contract extension made in 2014.
Guild representatives are meeting with ImpreMedia management next week.
