The city has issued its first snow alert of the year in anticipation of snow showers later today.
The alert is not a forecast but it does indicate possible winter weather around 4 p.m.
The designation allows the Sanitation Department to start loading salt spreaders and attaching tire chains and plows to its trucks.
NY1's forecast says accumulation is more likely on grassy areas than on the roads. However, the Sanitation Department says it's ready to work with the Office of Emergency Management and the Department of Transportation to handle the potentially messy evening commute.
You can get information about the city's response to all winter weather by going online to nyc.gov/severeweather or by calling 311.
