Crews are investigating what sparked a five-alarm brush fire that erupted on Staten Island Friday afternoon.

The blaze in Oakwood Beach started shortly after 1 p.m. Friday near Mill Road and Kissam Avenue.

Thick black smoke from the fire was visible for miles.

The FDNY says it took 44 units and 200 firefighters to get a handle on the fire.

"The fire started on the block behind us, jumped this road, and went to a deep-seeded area over here," said Richard Howe, a deputy assistant chief with the FDNY. "We had a hard time fighting because of the wind."

"Some of the flames were actually jumping from one area to another," said resident Joseph Varrone. "Pretty wild fire."

The FDNY says it took about two and half hours to put the fire out.

No injuries were reported.
