Former congressman Anthony Weiner is firing back at Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump for questioning his character and his wife's.
Trump last Friday suggested that Weiner's wife, long-time Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abdein, passed sensitive information to Weiner while Clinton was secretary of state.
"Who is Huma married to? One of the great sleezebags of our time. So, Huma is getting classified secrets, she's married to Anthony Weiner, who's a perv. No, he is!" Trump said.
Weiner responded while appearing on NY1's "Inside City Hall" Tuesday night.
"I think the idea to take someone who's served in government for 20 years and impugn her in that way is outrageous. I mean, he wants to make me a campaign issue. I'm not going to indulge that," Weiner said. "He didn't offer any evidence of this or information about this. He just impugned someone who worked in government for a long time and anyone who's ever worked with her knows that not only is she eminently qualified, but she does her job with skill and with grace and has done it for a very long time making enormous sacrifices for our country."
Trump attacked Weiner and Abedin in addressing Clinton's political problems related to her use of a private e-mail server when she was secretary of state.
A spokesman for Clinton responded saying Trump has a track record of making offensive remarks about women.
The spokesman also said it was not appropriate to make personal attacks against a staff member.
