The U.S. Forest Service says a firefighter has been killed while battling a wildfire near Lake Tahoe in California.
This happens as nearly two dozen workers from New York state are being dispatched to help fight the fires out west.
The governor says 20 employees and volunteers with the Department of Environmental Conservation are going to California, Oregon and Washington to help contain flames along the coast.
The U.S. Forest Service is footing the bill for the trip.
The fires have covered more than 200 square miles.
Since 1979, the state has typically sent one or two crews to help with major wildfires each year.
