The NYPD's "Summer All Out" crime prevention program begins today.

More than 300 officers normally assigned to desk jobs are hitting the streets of some high-crime neighborhoods.

The police department ran the same program last year.

But it decided to start it a month earlier this year in response to an uptick in shootings and murders.

Recent NYPD number show shootings were up nine percent through the end of May compared to the same period last year.

Murders were up 19 percent.

City officials insist much of the violence is gang related, and say overall crime is still down across the city.
