A Brooklyn Street was re-named Saturday to honor a city detective who was murdered last year.
West 6th Street between Avenue S and Avenue T in Gravesend is now Detective Wenjian Liu Way.
In January, the City Council voted unanimously to dedicate the street to Liu, who was spoken of by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton as an American hero.
"He was a hero. He was a man of Brooklyn. He was a man of New york. He was an American. He died for us," Bratton said Satuday,
The honor was welcome, but still difficult for Detective Liu's family, as expressed by his father and translated by his widow.
"He gave everything to this city. I am extremely proud of my son. He will always be remembered," said Liu's wife, Pei Xia Chen.
Detective Liu and his partner Detective Rafael Ramos were fatally shot while sitting in their patrol car in December. Next Saturday marks six months since their deaths.
Another street in Brooklyn will be re-named to honor Ramos.
