Governors Island took a major step forward in its recovery from Hurricane Sandy.
The federal government is providing nearly $12 million for storm-related repairs through FEMA's public assistance program.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler says the money is 90 percent of the funding needed to elevate electrical and other equipment, protecting it against future floods.
Nadler says the funds will ensure the Governors Island Trust can keep the Island running smoothly for the spring and summer seasons.
It re-opens to the public on May 23.
