It's still unclear what sparked a fast moving fire in Brooklyn early Thursday morning that sent residents running from their homes.

Officials say flames broke out around 4:30 a.m in the basement of a three-story building located at 982 East 78th Street in Canarsie and quickly spread.

"The fire started in the rear on the ground floor level. It auto exposed, meaning the fire came out the first floor of the basement and the rear, went to the first floor, the second floor and the top floor," said FDNY Chief Brian Foley.

Firefighters got flames under control by 5:30 a.m.

One firefighter and one resident suffered minor injuries.
