We could soon be seeing a Queens icon in a whole new light.

Borough President Melinda Katz says efforts are underway to illuminate the New York State Pavilion in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The pavilion was covered with colored glass and lights during the 1964 World's Fair. Since then it has deteriorated and Katz says lighting it with small LED bulbs is proving difficult.

"People have been talking about whether or not to knock it down, whether to build it, it would cost so much in city investment. But at the end of the day, it would have cost $11 million to knock it down, and what a waste of resources," said Katz.

Katz says restoring the pavilion will cost $6 million. Her office is putting up the money along with City Council Speaker, Melissa Mark-Viverito's.

Katz says she hopes the work will be finished by the end of the year.
