Police are asking for help trying to figure out who killed a man in the stairwell of a Bronx housing project.
The victim has been identified as Eric Simmons, a 68-year-old who did not live in the building.
Officers found him lying unconscious Wednesday afternoon on the ninth floor in the stairwell at the Melrose Houses.
NYPD Chief Robert Boyce said he had was found with five to six cuts in the head, as well as blunt force trauma.
At this point, Boyce said he does not believe this was a robbery.
"He had his wallet and his rings and his watch on him," Boyce said. "There was a packet of heroin on the ground. We don't know what role that played in the event."
Boyce said they found video of Simmons walking with another man in the area about two hours before his body was found in the stairwell.
