World Mental Health day begins later this month and one of the causes of mental health issues right now is a reported increase in people feeling lonely. At its most extreme, it can lead someone to take their own life.
According to the CDC, people ages 65 and over are at greatest risk and the suicide rate of men in 2021 was four times higher than women.
Peter Franz, a clinical assistant professor at the psychiatry research institute at Montefiore Einstein, joins “News All Day” on Wellness Monday to discuss this.
Loneliness has such a big impact on older people due to a variety of reasons, including the loss of friends who are getting older, a loss of autonomy, and the loss of prior connections at work.
Dr. Franz says that there may actually be benefits to social media when people see the stories of others going through tough times or suicidal thoughts.
To support those who might be at risk of suicide, help them create a schedule and routine, encourage them to see a doctor, have more social interaction and physical activity, and check in with them regularly.
Physical activity, in particular, has been shown to help those with mental health struggles.
