Indian Independence Day is celebrated on Aug. 15. It marks the day that India gained full independence from Great Britain after about 200 years of colonial rule. The city will celebrate with a parade on Sunday.

Randhir Jaiswal, Consul General of India in New York, joined “News All Day” to talk more on the parade.

Jaiswal says that India and the United States have shared democratic values and that the message of India is that they want to be a “force for global good.”

This year’s tagline is “Mission Life,” the same name as a mass movement launched by the Indian Prime Minister.

Jaiswal said, “Mission life is lifestyle about the environment. We want to tell the world that we must change our behavioral habits. We must change the way we live if we care about the planet.

As part of this, Jaiswal says the global community is celebrating the year of millets which are considered super foods that can also help the planet because they can be grown with less water than other foods.

The city’s Indian parade will go from 28th Street to 38th Street on Madison Avenue and starts at noon on Sunday.
