The New York City-based A.I.M dance company was started by choreographer Kyle Abraham but it is primarily run by women. The company focuses on work that is inspired by Black culture and history.

A.I.M’s Executive Director Sydnie Liggett-Dennis and Rehearsal Director Jessica Tong, joined “News All Day” on Women Wednesday to talk more about the company.

Liggett-Dennis originally wanted to be a dancer but in college, she realized that she had an interest in the business side of the industry. While she had imposter syndrome before taking on her leadership role, she found a group of women who supported her and that helped her embrace her abilities to succeed.

In addition to being the rehearsal director, Tong is also a mother. She says that while it’s difficult balancing the two; she hopes she’s an inspiration to them. Tong recommends women find their “why” and not let anyone tell them they can’t do something.

The dancers in the company are paid on a 52-week annual salary, which is rare for contemporary dance companies. They also provide health insurance, retirement contributions, and more.
