Glenn Frey, guitarist and singer for the legendary rock band The Eagles has died.

According to the band's web site, Frey died Monday in New York after battling several ailments for weeks.

Frey, originally from Detroit, co-founded the band with drummer Don Henley.

Together they became one of the most successful songwriting teams of the 1970s.

Frey sang lead vocals on some of their biggest hits including "Take it Easy", "Lyin Eyes", and "Heartache Tonight".

He won six Grammys with the Eagles, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 1998, their first year of eligibility.

He also had a successful solo career with hit songs including "The Heat is On" and "Smuggler's Blues".

Glenn Frey was 67 years old.
