In recent weeks, Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul have been pressing the federal government to expedite work authorizations for migrants arriving in New York City.

They have been demanding that migrants be allowed to take jobs in order to support themselves and depend less on the city for housing, food and other services.

Officials in the city claim the White House has not done enough to help, and without any financial promises for the future, the migrant crisis will likely take a turn for the worse and cost the city millions.

Now, a new op-ed published in amNewYork is suggesting another option: let the mayor and governor create a “New York-based work authorization permit that allows migrants to work in the five boroughs and throughout the state.”

The op-ed was penned by Grace Rauh, a former NY1 political reporter and executive director of the public police group 5Boro Institute, and Teresa Gonzalez, a board member with the New York immigration coalition. The two joined “Mornings On 1” Tuesday to elaborate on their message.
