New York City last month dispatched several members of the city’s emergency response teams north to assist in combating devastating wildfires ravaging parts of Canada.

The fires, which had generated an enormous amount of smoke, had far-reaching consequences, including a severe impact on the air quality in the Northeast region. On June 6, New York City experienced an environmental emergency when the air quality index skyrocketed to over 400, posing significant health risks to residents.

In a show of solidarity with Canada, Lt. Anthony Watts and Lt. Stephen Rhine with the Incident Management Team and others were deployed to control the fires.

During an interview on “Mornings On 1” Thursday, the two noted that the Canadian teams have been “overwhelmed” by the scope of the wildfires, and the New York team was grateful to “provide some relief.”

While the fires continue to burn in some areas of Canada, the two provided an update on the efforts to control the flames.
