New York City is expanding its use of hotels to provide emergency housing to asylum seekers, and Manhattan City Councilman Erik Bottcher said his district is eager to help.
The councilman, who appeared on “Mornings On 1” Tuesday, said the hotels are fine as temporary housing, but he is focused on long-term solutions.
The asylum seekers “don't want to land at the Watson Hotel forever. They have friends or family and other networks in the area,” he said.
He said staff at the hotel will work with the migrants to connect them with more resources so that they can move out of the hotel as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, Bottcher said his office is busy organizing winter clothing drives, food collections and other efforts to assist the migrants – and homeless New Yorkers – who are not prepared for the cold weather.
