Attorney General Letitia James is investigating interactions and possible misconduct by the NYPD against citizens during recent protests stemming from George Floyd's death.
Based on what she’s heard thus far, James says people were injured by police though they were protesting peacefully. She says it is her duty to protect their constitutional rights.
“Their physical injuries will heal, but all of them, just about everyone who testified, was traumatized as a result of the police interaction,” she said, calling the violence unacceptable.
On Monday, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea also testified.
“I’m glad that Commissioner Shea came and testified yesterday but I was disappointed with a lot of his testimony,” James said.
James wanted to ensure that the investigations be fair and balanced, which is why it was important that Shea testify, she said.
As part of the investigations, more than 100 people provided oral testimony, which included 18 hours of public hearings spanning three days, in addition to more than 300 written testimony submissions.
