1. Hochul warns congressional GOP to help clear $252B state budget without federal funding cuts
Gov. Kathy Hochul released the details behind her $252 billion state budget proposal for the next fiscal year complete, with tax cuts for the middle class, new spending for cops on the subway and increases for the state’s mammoth Medicaid program.
While her top budget official warned potential financial decisions out of Washington, D.C. could negatively affect the state, Hochul had her own message for New York’s Republicans now in power.
2. Adams refuses to criticize Trump executive orders
Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday refused to say much of anything about President Donald Trump. Adams was asked for his thoughts on a slew of executive orders the 47th president signed Monday night.
“There are a host of EOs [executive orders] that were done. And I do EO’s and people sometimes don’t agree with my EO’s and there’s one thing I want to be very clear on is the balance of power in this country,” Adams said. “He has the balance of power of use his EOs.”
3. Jan. 6 defendant from Brooklyn responds to Trump pardon
Pardoning roughly 1,500 criminal defendants related to the Jan. 6 insurrection was among the first actions taken by President Donald Trump as he returned to the Oval Office Monday night.
Trump has said the Jan. 6 defendants, including those accused and convicted of violent and non-violent offenses, have been held hostage by the Justice Department.
