1. Trump asks federal court to intervene in hush money case in bid to toss conviction, delay sentencing

Donald Trump asked a federal court late Thursday to intervene in his New York hush money criminal case, seeking a pathway to overturn his felony conviction and indefinitely delay his sentencing scheduled for next month.

Lawyers for the former president and current Republican nominee asked the federal court in Manhattan to seize the case from the state court where it was brought and tried, arguing that the historic prosecution violated Trump’s constitutional rights and ran afoul of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity.

2. Lithium-ion batteries to blame for two large fires, FDNY says

The FDNY says two large fires in 48 hours were caused by what has become a common culprit: lithium-ion batteries.

The most recent fire happened on a barge near a scrapyard in Long Island City Tuesday night. According to the FDNY, a discarded lithium-ion battery caught fire and the flames quickly spread.

3. Nassau County testing Trump-style policies in suburbs

Nassau County under County Executive Bruce Blakeman has become a policy and cultural counterweight to Democratic policies that dominate in New York City and Albany.

Enacting a mask ban, overseeing a police department without sanctuary policies, prohibiting the county from giving permits to sports leagues that allow males who identify as transgender girls or women to play alongside female athletes — Blakeman described these policies:

“People want to get back to common sense. That’s all they want to do. These crazy rules where they allow biological males to play against females, it lacks common sense and, quite frankly, I think it’s a violation of women’s rights,” he said.
