1. City says it’s again considering migrant tent shelters
Building a relief center for asylum seekers under tents on Randall’s Island was a controversial decision. Now, city officials say, they can’t rule out having to do it again.
“Everything is on the table,” emergency management commissioner Zach Iscol said Monday. “Yes, we’re considering it.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams continued to ask for federal and state aid in the expectation a pandemic-era immigration restriction would end and increase the flow of migrants into the city. However, the Supreme Court issued a last-minute ruling Monday that left the policy in place for now.
2. New York's sweeping climate and energy plan moves forward
A panel of top New York state officials, energy industry officials and experts on Monday approved a final plan for how to reach the goals set out in a law meant to end the state's use of fossil fuels and transition to renewable energy like wind, solar and hydroelectricity.
Backing up the plan is a sweeping climate law, approved in 2019, requiring New York to hit key benchmarks in the coming years under the transition: 70% renewable electricity by 2030 and 100% zero-emissions electricity by 2040. By 2050, New York must hit zero net emissions.
3. MTA to cut some weekday service on 7 subway lines, boost service on 5 other lines
The MTA will be making some adjustments to subway service starting in June 2023 that they say better reflects post-pandemic travel trends in the city.
The MTA says it will be adding trips on the G, J and M lines on weekends. It will also start Manhattan-bound A and C express trains earlier during the morning rush.
To make these additional trips possible, it will cut service on the 1, 6, 7, L, E, F and Q lines on Mondays and Fridays.
