1. Report: Cuomo office 'overpowered' ethics watchdogs in book approval
Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office "overpowered" staff at the state's primary ethics watchdog to win approval of a multimillion-dollar book deal for the then-governor, according to a report released Thursday by the Joint Commission on Public Ethics.
The report provides a window into the approval process by the commission's staff for Cuomo's memoir about the pandemic, which became the focus of several investigations that carried over after he left office, and the strong-armed tactics that were alleged to have been used.
2. DACA recipients fight for their status in Brooklyn federal court
On Thursday, plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit asked a federal judge in Brooklyn to force the federal government to start processing old applications for immigrants who filed for status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — also known as DACA — and begin accepting new ones.
The Obama-era program that allows some people who came to the United States as children to live and work here legally was put on pause during the Trump administration. Then the Biden administration reopened the application process for new applicants, only to be once again challenged by a different judge in Texas who ruled it was illegal.
3. NYPD: Shootings decline, but overall crime jumps by 31%
The city saw fewer shootings last month than it did in June of last year, but overall crime jumped by 31% year-over-year, newly-released NYPD data shows.
The NYPD recorded 125 shooting incidents in June, down from 165 a year before, the department said in a press release Thursday.
