ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- So how do the voter turnout numbers break down in Monroe County?

When looking at numbers from the county board of elections, much of the data falls in line with expectations.

More than 326,000 registered voters cast a ballot for president.

Like many cities, Rochester heavily favored Democrats, but so did some surrounding towns like Brighton and Irondequoit.

While the city tipped the county in favor of Hillary Clinton, other towns like Greece voted for Donald Trump.

Many people expressed shock at the outcome even though polls showed a narrowing lead for Hillary Clinton.

Local experts we spoke with say less enthusiasm combined with less reliable polling data were factors.

"It looks like for example that the African American vote was not as high as it has been and the millennials did not come out in the same numbers in past elections," said Timothy Kneeland, Nazareth College. "So that certainly hurt Hillary Clinton who tried to pitch her message to those particular groups. She also didn't do as well with Hispanic voters. Some of the exit poll data suggested that Donald Trump did better with Hispanic voters than Mitt Romney."

"I would suggest if you're a young pollster you should find a new profession because they took a direct hit in terms of the credibility of their own craft, their own field last night," political anaylst Curt Smith said. "I think fewer and fewer people are going to be needing pollsters in years to come."
