This Black History Month, the city's tourism organization NYC & Company is launching a new centralized resource called The Black Experience in NYC, containing neighborhood guides, videos, interviews and more.
“New York City is the only city in the world where you have the entire Black diaspora here,” said Rondel Holder, the Senior Director of Multicultural Content at NYC & Company. “So that really creates Black history every day in New York City, and that’s really what we wanted to highlight.”
The project contains 21 virtual experiences, including the Harlem Heritage Tour, in which people can explore the neighborhood’s rich history from the Harlem Renaissance to the civil rights movement. The Inside Out Tour offers both in-person and virtual versions of the NYC Slavery and Underground Railroad Walking Tour.
There are also programs and exhibits at museums and other cultural centers, including the Queens Botanical Garden, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Museum of Modern Art.
“We really want to showcase the vibrancy and energy of the Black community,” said Holder, a New York City native.
He also encouraged people to take advantage of NYC Restaurant Week To-Go, which has been extended through February 28. He said more than 500 restaurants are participating this year, many of which are Black-owned.
While the project is being launched during Black History Month, Holder says it’s intended to last far beyond the month of February.
“We’ve put it together in a way where I think everyone can look at the content and find a way to get their Black experience in New York City,” he said.
