House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the recent resignations at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York are "troubling developments."
"We're going to have to get real answers to questions that relate to how the Department of Justice directive came about relative to the dismissal of charges that was ordered," he said during an interview on "Inside City Hall" Thursday.
Manhattan's top federal prosecutor, Danielle Sassoon, and five high-ranking Justice Department officials resigned after Sassoon refused an order to drop corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams.
But Jeffries, a Brooklyn Democrat, said the order came "in a manner that would have allowed the Department of Justice to continue to bring those charges back and effectively, seemingly were designed to keep Eric Adams on a short leash. That's a very troubling situation," he said.
Earlier Thursday, Adams met with President Donald Trump's "border czar," and in a statement said his administration aims to reopen a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office on Rikers Island.
Jeffries said from the standpoint in Washington, D.C., the border needs to be secure, the immigration system needs to be fixed "in a comprehensive and in a bipartisan way," and the nation needs to protect Dreamers, farm workers and families across the country.
"And anything that's done here in the city of New York should be consistent with those ideals. We are both a nation anchored in the rule of law and a nation of immigrants and that certainly has been the case here in New York CIty throughout the great journey that has been the Big Apple," he said.
In a post on X, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes wrote, "If Adams won't resign, he must be removed."
This is explosive.

Mayor Adams is putting the City of New York and its people at risk in exchange for escaping charges.
As long as Trump wields this leverage over Adams, the city is endangered. We cannot be governed under coercion.

Jeffries said he hasn't had a conversation with Ocasio-Cortes or Gov. Kathy Hochul, noting that the governor is the only one who is able to do that.
"So I'm going to reserve judgment until those conversations are had," he said.
