Former Mayor Bill de Blasio called the multiple federal charges filed against Mayor Eric Adams "flimsy."
"From the very beginning, I thought the charges against Mayor Adams were unfair and flimsy. I didn't like, at all, the way it was handled. I think it was unfair to him. I think it was unfair to the city," he said during an interview on "Inside City Hall" Wednesday. "And I think it's right for these charges to be dropped."
Earlier this week, the Justice Department ordered federal prosecutors to drop Adams' corruption case.
De Blasio said although he agreed that the charges should be dropped, he did not agree with how the DOJ handled it.
"I don't like the way the DOJ did it. They should have said, 'On the merits, this just is not worth pursuing.' But I think it is right to get past this," he said.
De Blasio emphasized that the mayoral primary is only four months away.
"DOJ is supposed to have a cardinal rule that they do not interfere with the democratic mayoral process. And I think they had already broken that rule up [until] now," he said. "So at least by stopping now, they returned the decision about the future back to the people of New York City."
