Back in June, the nonprofit Citymeals on Wheels released a report spotlighting how a portion of elderly New Yorkers don’t know where their next meal will come from.
According to the report, 41% of the city’s elderly say they are sometimes or never able to shop for groceries, while 38% say they have limited ability to prepare food.
The nonprofit organization’s 18,000 volunteers have served more than 22,000 older New Yorkers, delivered 70 million meals, and stocked more than 50,000 emergency meals.
Now, with Thanksgiving approaching, Citymeals on Wheels is working to get more meals out to elderly New Yorkers.
Beth Shapiro, the chief executive officer of Citymeals on Wheels, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to talk more about how everyone can help their neighbors this year.
“Really take a look at this population and understand that there is historic underinvestment in services for older adults, and that needs to be addressed with significant investment, but small dollars compared to what the overall city budget is, to make this an age-friendly city,” Shapiro said.
