The City Council passed a bill last month that would legalize jaywalking. Under the legislation, the NYPD would no longer issue summonses to pedestrians who cross the street against the light or outside of the crosswalk.
Supporters of the bill say enforcement of jaywalking disproportionately targets Black and Hispanic New Yorkers who received 92% of the nearly 500 summonses issued last year, according to city data.
City Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse is the lead sponsor of the bill and represents several neighborhoods in southeast Brooklyn, including all or parts of Bergen Beach, Canarsie, Flatlands, Marine Park and Sheepshead Bay.
She joined “Inside City Hall” Friday night to discuss the legislation.
