The City Council is demanding Sheriff Anthony Miranda turn over records related to the seizure of cash from unlicensed cannabis shops.
It comes after he testified before the Council last month saying he did not "believe" his deputies were illegally taking money, but smoke shop owners claim thousands of dollars are unaccounted for.
Two City Councilmembers have since submitted a formal letter to the sheriff’s office to turn over more details on the citywide “Operation Padlock,” which looks to crack down on unlicensed marijuana dispensaries.
Councilwoman Gale Brewer, who represents the neighborhoods of Hell's Kitchen, Midtown and the Upper West Side, and is also the chair of the committee on oversight and investigations, sat down with Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to talk more the ongoing investigation into the unaccounted-for cash.
“We want the data. How much was collected by [Sheriff Miranda]? How much was collected by NYPD?” Brewer said. “There’s just so many unanswered questions from the sheriff.”
