Mayor Eric Adams was not carrying his personal cellphone when approached by federal agents last November, according to the federal indictment unsealed last week.

When he turned over the phone the next day, he told investigators he’d changed the password the day before but forgotten it. It was revealed in court this week that investigators have still not been able to crack into the phone a year later, which a prosecutor called a “significant wild card” in the case.
