New York City is home to the largest Bangladeshi population in the United States. It has tripled over the past two decades with more than 100,000 Bangladeshis currently living across the five boroughs, especially in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

Right now, Bangladesh is undergoing a massive transformation after the prime minister of 15 years, Sheikh Hasina, resigned and fled the country earlier this month. Her exit followed weeks of unrest and violent protests that left hundreds dead, including many young college students.

An interim government is now in place to organize elections soon. But now, as Bangladesh reels from the violence, it faces an immense political challenge, one that is affecting the larger diaspora in the city.

Chaumtoli Huq, an associate professor of law at the CUNY School of Law and a Bangladeshi New Yorker, joined Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to talk about the country’s future.
