The city is planning to move ahead with a redesign of half of McGuinness Boulevard, a busy thoroughfare in Greenpoint, Brooklyn that has been the site of 150 injuries since 2019.
The original proposal called for a reduction in the number of traffic lanes and the creation of a protected bike path, but now, the city says it will only add parking-protected bike lanes in each direction.
The right lane of each side of the street will also turn into a parking lane between the hours of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Advocates say the latest changes will not make the road any safer, and are encouraging the mayor to reconsider the plan.
Councilman Lincoln Restler, who represents the neighborhood surrounding the boulevard, sat down with NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Monday to talk more about the plan.
“McGuinness Boulevard is one of the most dangerous roadways in Brooklyn,” Restler said. “That cut-through traffic doesn’t need to be running through what is now a dense, residential neighborhood. It’s dangerous.”
