Rep. Grace Meng said she is standing in support of Kamala Harris, who on Monday began campaigning for the job after President Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy.
“This is a decision that our president, Joe Biden, who is one of the most compassionate and accomplished presidents in our lifetime. That’s a decision he has made,” Meng said during an interview on “Inside City Hall” Monday. “And at that very moment where he decided to withdraw, I supported and endorsed Kamala Harris.”
Biden’s decision to not run for reelection comes weeks after his debate performance, which sparked growing calls among Democratic lawmakers for him to withdraw from the race.
“I know that people were concerned, but I really feel like there was a concerted effort to not just have President Biden withdraw, but people who were making calls to bypass our vice president, Kamala Harris, and instead call for an open convention. So I was very frustrated with what was happening in some circles behind the scenes while we have an election to win in about 100 days,” she said.
According to the Queens congresswoman, who represents the neighborhoods of Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Jackson Heights and Maspeth, Harris has constantly worked with the borough on initiatives, such as making sure there is affordable internet access, combating gun violence and fighting back against discrimination against the Asian American community.
“We are excited that she will be, hopefully, in a position to continue the work that she has partnered with so many communities and bring back more resources back to Queens and to New York City,” Meng said.
