A court hearing was held Tuesday afternoon on whether the city should remain in control of Rikers Island or if it should be taken over by a federal receiver.

But the fate of the jail complex won’t be decided for at least a few months, with a new court date now scheduled for September.

The judge, however, has urged the Department of Correction to improve conditions until then.

Advocates and lawmakers rallied at Foley Square Tuesday afternoon to demand for the closure of the jail site.

Melanie Dominguez, the organizing director of the Katal Center for Equity, Health and Justice, a nonprofit community organization advocating for the closure of Rikers, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to talk about efforts to shut down Rikers and her work to end mass incarceration.
