A new City Council bill would reduce penalties for certain building owners not yet compliant with Local Law 97, the city’s landmark climate law, which requires large buildings to slash carbon emissions.
The legislation would allow owners of co-ops and condos to include gardens or green spaces as part of their building’s square footage when calculating emission limits.
Under the bill, certain buildings would be spared entirely of fines through 2035.
Advocates, though, argue the bill would weaken the climate law.
Councilwoman Linda Lee, the bill’s lead sponsor, joined NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall” Friday to discuss more.
She represents several neighborhoods in Queens, including all or part of Fresh Meadows-Utopia, Jamaica, Cunningham Park, Auburndale, Bayside, Queens Village and more.
