A battle is brewing between the City Council and Mayor Eric Adams over the mayor’s plans to change the city charter.
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams recently introduced legislation that would give the Council more oversight over the mayor’s appointment of 21 key commissioners.
The move would be put to a citywide referendum, but the mayor created a Charter Revision Commission that could stymie the Council’s efforts.
The mayor has filled the commission with longtime allies, including donors and some lobbyists with business before the city.
Ben Weinberg, the director of public policy at the Citizens Union, a nonprofit good government group committed to government transparency and accountability, joined NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall” Friday to discuss more.
