The city is required by law to close its massive jail complex on Rikers Island by August 2027, but plans to move detainees to borough-based jails have run drastically behind.

At a hearing last week, councilmembers found contracts for both the proposed Queens and Bronx jails to be far over budget and way past the deadline.

This comes after Mayor Eric Adams has made it no secret that he does not believe the plan to reduce the jail population and fit everyone in smaller jails is feasible.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are calling for the Adams administration to find more ways to comply with the mandate.

This includes making changes in the final budget to send more funding to community programs to help prevent incarceration in the first place.

Councilwoman Sandy Nurse, the chair of the Committee on Criminal Justice, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to talk more about the status of the plans for these borough-based jails.

“The public safety issue and the humanitarian crisis of Rikers Island is extremely deadly, and it’s very urgent,” Nurse said. “We need to see the administration take this seriously that we are not sending people to that island after 2027.”
