The speed limit on some city streets could be lowered to 20 miles per hour in the coming weeks.
On Thursday, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed Sammy’s Law, marking a major victory after years of advocacy from families of traffic violence victims.
The hope is that reducing the speed limit in some areas will reduce deaths and serious injuries in vehicular crashes.
The legislation is named after Sammy Cohen Eckstine, who was struck and killed by a speeding driver in Park Slope, Brooklyn, back in 2013.
The law gives the city the authority to lower citywide speed limits.
Amy Cohen, Sammy’s mother, joined NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall” Friday to talk about a victory that was years in the making.
“It sadly took too long, but finally it has happened,” she said. "Slower speed limits are proven to work.”
