Just this weekend, a Gucci store in Manhattan was robbed of $50,000 worth of items.
Incidents like these have prompted Gov. Kathy Hochul to introduce measures to tackle retail theft.
But advocates say the penalties on serial shoplifters should be tougher and that more can be done.
Nelson Eusabio, a founder of the Collective Action to Protect our Stores, a coalition of 10,000 New York businesses, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on "Inside City Hall" Tuesday night to talk more about the coalition’s suggestions for combatting retail theft.
"We've always had shoplifting, but now it's worse than before," Eusabio said.
