Democrat Tom Suozzi defeated his opponent Republican Mazi Pilip in the race for New York’s 3rd Congressional District, which covers parts of Eastern Queens and Nassau County..

The Democratic win narrows the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. The race could also prove to have major implications on the balance of power in Congress come the November elections.

Polls had the two candidates in a dead heat. In 2022, the district went for Lee Zeldin in the gubernatorial election. And two years prior, Joe Biden won the district, although the lines were different.

Lawrence Levy, the executive dean at the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday to talk about the results of election night.

“Nation suburbs have been kind of trending bluer these days. The Democratic party has had a lot of luck regaining, retaining congressional seats within these communities, except on Long Island,” he said. “But last night, the Democrats had a really good one.”
