On Tuesday, a federal appeals court ruled that former President Donald Trump does not have immunity from facing prosecution for alleged crimes he committed during his presidency.
This is regarding the criminal trial against Trump for interference in the 2020 federal election.
Trump’s legal team claimed he had “presidential immunity,” but the three D.C. Circuit judges presiding over the case found that the public’s interest in holding a president accountable of criminal actions outweighed the president’s interests.
While his team has vowed to appeal the ruling, Trump also faces a $83.3 million settlement in the defamation case against writer E. Jean Carroll. A judge is also expected to make a ruling this month in the civil fraud trial in New York.
The appeals court has given Trump until Monday to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to get involved.
Jerry Goldfeder, veteran election attorney, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday to discuss more.
