A high number of New Yorkers are struggling with putting food on the table, an issue that has been exacerbated by the pandemic and inflation.

A new report by the nonprofit organization Hunger Free America found 16% of the city’s population or 1.3 million people faced hunger at some point between 2020 to 2022.

A borough-by-borough breakdown can be seen in the chart above.

Staten Island saw the highest level with more than 21% of the borough’s residents, saying they didn’t have enough to eat during that two-year period.

But Brooklyn was home to the largest number of individuals living in struggling homes, a group of almost 400,000.
