The city's legally mandated deadline to shut down the Rikers Island jail complex by Aug. 2027 is looming.

To make that plan a reality, the city council announced this week it is updating the Independent Rikers Commission.

It was originally convened back in 2016, but is now returning to assist the Adams administration with an updated blueprint to ensure the deadline to close the troubled jail complex is met.

Mayor Adams has recently cast doubt on the city's ability to close Rikers, which comes as the system faces a possible federal takeover.

Chair of the commission and former State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman joined political reporter Bobby Cuza Thursday to talk more about the panel's priorities.
