Earlier this week, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams announced an updated Independent Rikers Commission to help ensure that the Rikers Island jail complex will close by 2027, which is mandated by law.

The commission was initially created under former Mayor Bill de Blasio nearly eight years ago.

The troubled jail complex has been trending in the wrong direction for the last two years. Several key indicators are going up, including the average length of each stay and the average daily jail population.

It all comes as a new book, called "These Walls: The Battle for Rikers Island and the Future of America's Jails," was released this week.

The book gives a deeper look into the plan to close Rikers, and highlights local opposition to the smaller borough-based jails that would replace the city's largest jail.

The author of the book, Eva Fedderly, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday night to talk more about Rikers Island.
