As city schools embrace the use of emerging artificial intelligence technology, local lawmakers are looking to understand the benefits and the risks involved.
The City Council held a hearing Wednesday to get some answers from education officials on how AI tools are being used in schools, as well as how third-party vendors are vetted.
Education officials testified that AI tools are important to students’ education and career training.
City Councilwoman Jennifer Gutiérrez, chair of the council’s committee on technology, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” to discuss more.
“We want to ensure that our schools, obviously, are completely connected and that they have access, that our young people have access. That they can start thinking about careers in this industry as early as first, second and third grade,” said Gutiérrez.
Her district includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods Williamsburg and Bushwick, as well as Ridgewood in Queens.
