Summer is almost over, but the fight to improve water safety throughout the city is still underway.
Last week, City Council passed legislation that would require the city Department of Parks and Recreation to provide free swimming lessons to second grade students in public schools.
The department is also tasked with looking for suitable locations for more public pools to be built.
And they will be required to submit an annual report on staffing levels.
One of the politicians behind the effort, Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers, joined host Errol Louis Monday night on "Inside City Hall" to discuss water safety, city lifeguards and more.
Brooks-Powers represents District 31 in Queens, which includes the communities of Arverne, Brookville, Edgemere, Laurelton, Springfield Gardens, Rosedale and Far Rockaway. She is the City Council majority whip and the chair of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
