A recent poll by the political and lobbying consulting firm Hamilton Campaign Network examined the state of Latino voters in New York.
“We have heard and we have seen so many people who know very little about politics in the Latino community,” Luis Miranda Jr., founder of the Hamilton Campaign Network, said.
Miranda and Melissa Mark-Viverito, president of the Hamilton Campaign Network and former City Council speaker, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Friday to discuss the survey.
Voters who participated in the study had a hard time naming an influential Latino leader in New York, with just under 15% naming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
According to the poll, Latino voters are also split in their opinion of the Democratic Party — with 40% saying that the state government does not represent or incorporate the Latino perspective.
“We knew it was probably gonna be a little bit, you know, but not to that extent. The fact that there was not one consistent messaging voice that carried through is, to us, problematic,” Mark-Viverito said. “We gotta figure out if we wanna move an agenda forward, we gotta be able to galvanize. That to us shows that there’s not that leadership that we so desperately need in our community and we gotta figure that out.”
